The Beautiful and mysterious Agrasen ki Baoli
The long history of Delhi has witnessed various settlements during different time periods giving the city a rich historical, cultural and architectural heritage blending perfectly with the contemporary cosmopolitan structure of Delhi. There are numerous ancient ruins tucked along with the modern skyscrapers, and it provides the landscape of Delhi a different look altogether. The old central Delhi area is home to one such fine historical site which came to light recently. The Agrasen ki Baoli, a medieval era stepwell structure is located in the Barakhamba area of New Delhi, perfectly tucked between the modern day buildings of the area. 

HISTORY OF The Stepwell;

The Agrasen ki Baoli represents the Tughlaq era construction which consists of boulders and big rocks plastered with lime. The initial construction of stepwell dated back to the time of Mahabharata and was constructed by Maharaja Agrasen of that period. The baoli was renovated during the Tughlaq era with the help of Agrawal community and Muslim masons. The baoli is divided into three stories with windows and rooms built for multi-purpose use. Lately, the baoli was filled with water up to two stories, but now it has been dried up. The western side of the stepwell has a mosque with chaitya inscriptions on the walls and pillars. According to the legends, the stepwell was accessible to the members of all communities and was the most useful well during the medieval times.

Myths and Mysteries;

The concept of ghost and spirits is very much trending and prevalent in today’s world. The capital city of Delhi has got its share of haunted sites and the Agrasen ki Baoli is one of the sites that is famous for its mysterious nature. According to the sayings, the Agrasen ki Baoli was considered to be the place where black water was stored, and it hypnotized the depressed and lonely to commit suicide. The saying of dark spirits and supernatural powers present in the baoli is considered to be true, according to some eyewitnesses who themselves have experienced something fishy at the place. The theory and accounts have been out rightly rejected by experts and claimed it to be a “false propaganda.”
Though not a paramount historical site, the Agrasen ki Baoli has become a famous tourist attraction amongst the people of Delhi because of its prime location and architectural genius providing a beautiful background for excellent pictures. The site which was not known to a majority of the people was made famous by the Bollywood movie PK in the year 2014. The baoli might be one of the top tourist places in Delhi, but the mysterious nature of the screeching sound of bats and pigeons and the calm of uneasiness in the structure makes you think the secrets that the baoli withholds within itself.
